Nice to meet you.

Hi. I’m Jen.

I’m a traveler. An educator. A writer.

And when I was 5, I had a Hello Kitty diary filled with very deep thoughts and deeply etched Kermit the Frog drawings. “I’m gonna publish this one day,” I told my mother.

My mother, unenthused, replied back, “No one publishes diaries, Jenny. Writers write stories. Fiction stories.”

So I spent the next 25 years procrastinating, trying to find fiction. I waited tables at Thai restaurants, photojournaled my way through barbed-wired border crossings, and worked as a music professor teaching Irish songs to Korean children in China. The problem was that life got in the way, providing the best stories of all. I then spent ten years in inner-city education mentoring youth how to write, all so I didn’t have to do the hard work of doing it myself.

Finally, I turned 30, and I could procrastinate no more. No longer could I hide behind my travels, my teaching, or a tri-fecta of Masters degrees. Nor could I feign authorship because I had written for snoozy conferences, socially-minded churches, and the good old NYC Board of Education. Nope. Somewhere along the way, I also grew a nagging in my chest that said (in a thick Long Island accent), “Honey child, get off yo’ behind. Get to it.”

And (more importantly) somewhere along the way, I sat down at the typewriter to start documenting life, which lets me meet all of you.

It is so nice to meet you. I hope we can become great friends.

Currently, I’m stationary in California, which means I can’t spend my days climbing bamboo trees. However, I’m determined to remain awake in the midst of a 9-5. And I hope you are too.

So welcome to the Wild Awakeness Project. Where each day is a safari in your own backyards. Let’s travel close. Travel safe. And travel lightly. Together.

“Every morning the world is created… Each pond with its blazing lilies is a prayer heard and answered lavishly,  every morning, whether or not you have ever dared to be happy, whether or not you have ever dared to pray.”
